Social Media Has Leveled the Playing Field For Many Industries…
Five years ago if you would have told me I would make my professional career as a social media manager and digital media strategist I probably would have laughed in your face. Even during my undergraduate journey at Rutgers University-New Brunswick as an eager journalism and media studies, I knew the traditional career track just wasn’t for me.
While browsing my Facebook timeline, I came across an advertisement for my favorite recording artist then a light bulb went off. What if I could use my journalist training to tell stories about my favorite artists as they performed at my surrounding venues? The rest is history! For the next six years, I spent my professional career curating stories in digital spaces. In my career, I’ve been fortunate enough to work on social media campaigns for Grammy award-winning singer and reality star Tamar Braxton’s “Love & War” tour, actor and comedian Katt Williams’ “Growth Spurt” tour and Grammy award-winning and Stellar award-winning Gospel recording artist Tasha Cobbs. You can do the same. Unlock your social media star power!
Social Media Myths vs. Facts
Myth: I created accounts for my business on multiple platforms, customers will find me.
Fact: With so many businesses competing for attention across social media the days of being present is no longer enough. Selecting the proper platform for business or brand and maintaining a commanding presence is more important now more than ever. What is your goal with being on social media?
Myth: I have hundreds/thousands of followers across my accounts.
Fact: Securing a large number of social media followers is indeed a great accomplishment. However, the number you should be focused on more so than your follower count is your account’s engagement rate. Remember thousands of followers mean nothing if you can only garner a few dozen likes/share/comments. What are you doing to keep your followers engaged?
Myth: My posts on social media always receive tons of likes. My job is done.
Fact: The battle is not over. Now that you’ve established your engagement rate is high, what are you doing to cash in on your social media currency? How many purchases were made as a result of those likes? How are you turning those virtual likes, share, reposts into real-world customers?
